From Comfort Zone to BIG Zone: A Guide to Mindset Mastery and Growth

Here’s the cold, hard truth about running a service business: quality is your product—and your people are the foundation that makes it possible. Whether it’s in my Kozy Getaways management company or my new Mighty Clean venture, my greatest inhibitor to scaling has always been finding and keeping reliable talent. I’ve realized that a reliable hiring strategy is one of the most important aspects of running a successful business.

I recently found myself drowning in a flood of last-minute texts and no-shows for interviews and shifts. Why? Because I was coping with a symptom - unreliability - instead of implementing a bulletproof Reliable Hiring Strategy to solve the root cause.

When you’re stuck in this cycle, it’s frustrating. People say all the right things, check all the boxes, and then they disappear or quit on day one! I realized I needed to stop relying on luck and start building an intentional system to weed out the unpredictability of the hiring process..

If you’re ready to stop being let down, disappointed, and left to do everything in your business, and start building a high-performing team that drives your success, it's time to Boss² Up and refine your hiring process.

The Fatal Mistake: Trusting Words Over Systems

In my experience, many entrepreneurs (myself included!) make the mistake of assuming good intentions equate to good work ethic. We trust the charming phone interview or the perfect resumé.

But a great Reliable Hiring Strategy operates like a thorough quality assurance check for commitment. As I learned firsthand, the biggest challenge is not recruiting; it’s being strategic enough upfront to identify if a person's behaviors will truly align with your desired outcomes.

Here are three non-negotiables to incorporate into your system:

1. The Power of Wickets and Warnings

Think of your recruitment process as a series of wickets - small, simple tests that candidates must clear to prove they are serious, reliable, and respectful of your time. This is how you spot red flags early.

  • Respecting Time: When a candidate consistently cancels or asks to reschedule an interview with little notice, that is a red flag. You should treat your own time as highly valuable and respect theirs, but their behavior often signals a lack of accountability in their personal life. If they can't manage their schedule for an interview, how will they manage a client's time?

  • Background Checks Aren't Just for Crime: In our industry, we found a high volume of cleaning candidates couldn't pass background checks for one reason or another. Having a clear, non-negotiable policy - and sticking to it - is essential. As a leader, you must decide where your line is for second chances.

2. Weaving Core Values into the Interview

Your business should run on core values. Don't just list them on the wall; use them as a screening tool.

Instead of asking, "Are you reliable?" ask behavioral-based questions that reveal their past actions: "Tell me about a situation when you had to call off at the last minute. What steps did you take to ensure the shift was still covered?"

A dedicated in-person interview is important. We realized that a cleaner who only cleans alone is a very different fit than one who has to clean on a team. A face-to-face interaction allows you to test for skills and gauge whether they fit your culture. You can only get that human-to-human read when you're right there in the room with them.

3. The Power of the Paid Trial Shift

The true test of a person's reliability and quality of work is the trial shift. As the old saying goes, actions speak louder than words.

If a candidate clears the background check and the interview, bring them in for a short, paid shift. This shifts the dynamic:

  • It tests commitment: They have to show up on time and follow through on a task.

  • It tests skills: You observe their quality of work directly.

  • It tests culture fit: When working in teams, you immediately see if they mesh with your existing high performers.

If a candidate fails the trial or bails last minute, you haven't wasted weeks on training and onboarding. You've simply used your system to efficiently weed out someone who wasn't the right fit.

Your Next Power Move: Invest in the System

I know that implementing a system as deep as this feels like a cost. And it is -  initially. But, girl, you cannot afford not to. Every hour you spend dealing with turnover, poor service quality, or recruitment drama costs you far more than investing in a supervisor or a robust system.

Don't let the cost of doing it right prevent you from moving forward. Make the strategic Power Move today to strengthen your vetting process.
